ROOF RATS, NORWAY RATS, MICE, AND PEROMYSCUS RODENTS……. What you should know about Rodent Control!
Rodents are a major concern for humans for many reasons. One is they are disease vectors. Rodents carry many different diseases, most are bacterial and treatable with antibiotics. We find this to be mostly true with commensal rodents. This is not always the case and all diseases can be dangerous depending on the circumstances.
Commensal rodents
Such as the roof rat, the Norway rat or the house mouse…flourish in an urban environment. They all share the same foods and accommodations we we find appealing. This places them in close proximity with humans. They carry diseases like Rat Bite fever, Leptospirosis, and LCM. These diseases may be treated with antibiotics because they are bacterial.
Peromyscus rodents
Like White-Footed mouse or the Deer mouse, can carry a potentially deadly disease called Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. This is a virus spread my dried fecal matter that becomes airborne and it is not treatable with antibiotics. Hantavirus was first found in 1993 in the four corners area of the United States.
Plague
such as the Black Plague which whipped out 75 to 200 million people in Eurasia, may be transmitted to humans by fleas such as the Oriental Rat Flea. This presents a dual pest problem.
